While a contributor to Arte Povera and Neo-Dadaist art movements, Piero Gilardi may be best known for his Nature Carpets. Don’t let the title fool you, the so-called carpets, filled with squishy leaves, acorns, flowers and plant life, were made in many sizes and form factors. Gilardi wanted them to be used, the forms being conducive to walking, laying, sitting or simply admiring. Made of the same polyurethane foam used to create mattresses, Gilardi’s wall work Untitled (Alberi e farfalle) shown here depicts an idyllic scene of butterflies among flowering trees. The monumental piece is exceptionally well-preserved and rare.
