In 1959, Mario Caroli began sculpting using raw, Siberian pine wood. Inspired by Giorgio de Chirico’s 1963 painting Mobili nella Valle, Ceroli eventually developed a series of sculptural, exaggerated furniture forms under the same name. Included in the series was the Fratina chair, an example of which is included here in Different Tendencies. The chair’s shape is the form most closely aligned with de Chiroco’s painting and is a classic example of Italian design in an uncommon material of the time.
