A graduate of the Politecnico di Torino, Sottsass began his design career in 1947. Starting in 1957, he became the artistic director of Poltronova and designed some of the most iconic pieces for the Italian furniture manufacturer including the Kubirolo modular furniture system and Superbox series of free-standing closets. He included his Svincolo lamp in the first Studio Alchimia exhibition in 1979 and founded Memphis, maybe his most recognizable legacy, in 1981.
