In 1974, Enzo Mari published “Proposta per un’autoprogrettzaione” (Proposal for Self-Planning). The work was the culmination of experiments Mari undertook with his assistants to create models of furniture that anyone could theoretically—and relatively easily, with a hammer, a few nails and planks of rough wood—make themselves. Mari’s concept was intended to imbue consumers, who had to make the furniture with their own hands, with an appreciation for the value of design. Included in Different Tendencies is an example of one of two beds in the project, an early example built from a kit retailed by Simon International, Italy.
